Today, Louisville City has announced the signing of Kyle Morton, a two-time finalist for USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Year. Morton is the 2nd Kyle signed from the now-defunct Saint Louis FC and will add some much-needed depth to the goalkeeper position to compete with the recently re-signed Parker Siegfried. He played college ball at James Madison and later played for the Rochester Rhinos and Pittsburgh Riverhounds before he joined Saint Louis FC for their final season in 2020. The 6’4”, 27-year-old spend the 2021 season under contract with the Houston Dynamo in the MLS and was later loaned to Memphis 901, where he immediately earned Player Of The Week. He returned from his loan and earned an MLS start before the end of the 2021 season.
“We are excited to be able to add such a quality goalkeeper into this group,” said Coach Danny Cruz. “After our interview with Kyle, it was clear that we would be getting a determined player who has extremely high expectations. His ability to direct from the back and make the big saves were two key traits that stuck out to us when scouting him. We are looking forward to getting him to Louisville and integrating him into the group.”
“Signing Kyle was one of our primary objectives this offseason, and thanks to Danny, James O’Connor, and Austin Buchanan we got it done,” said goalkeepers coach, Scott Budnick. “Kyle is the total package, and I am glad to know we will be game planning this season with him on our side of the lineup sheet.”
“Having played against Louisville City FC however many times, including at the new stadium, and knowing the type of guys who have come through there, it was a no brainer when the offer came across,” Morton said. “If I was going to play in the USL, it was only going to be at Louisville City."
“I know about the club, the facilities, and the expectations. That’s all something I want to align myself with, because it’s a challenge, and I want to win. But I know I’ll have to earn my spot. I’m excited to contribute and compete for a championship.”
Goalkeeper competition is never a bad thing, especially when you are adding someone of Kyle's caliber into the mix. Leading into the 2021 season, John Morrissey (@USLTactics) was high on Morton coming off his time in Saint Louis. A very exciting addition to bolster the defense and backfill Chris Hubbard.
There is plenty of footage of our new keeper to review to give you a glimpse of what we've acquired.
