The long speculated fate of Louisville City’s young star, Jonathan Gomez, has officially been announced! In January 2022, he will officially join La Liga side, Real Sociedad. While he is expected to be joining their B squad, a jump from the USL to La Liga, one of the biggest leagues in the world, is massive. JoGo, a potential US or Mexican international, has worked hard for years to prove himself to make this dream become a reality.
“I’m honored to take this next step in my career,” Gomez said. “I visited a few other clubs, and Real Sociedad stood out when I was able to see the training grounds and stadium as well as meet the staff. I think my game — my technical, tactical, and physical abilities — fits well into their system. Obviously, Louisville City FC has played a big part in my development these past two years. I’m 100% concentrated on trying to win a championship here before turning my focus to Spain.”
“When we set out on this journey with Jonathan and his family two years ago, we knew that a moment like today would come," said LouCity’s Coach Danny Cruz. "I am extremely proud of this young man for a lot of different reasons. He is a humble, hardworking, talented soccer player who understands the importance of culture both on and off the field. I think it is important to recognize that there are a lot of people here at Louisville City FC that have played a key role in his development. JoGo came to Louisville and trusted in our plan. He trusted that we had only his best interests at heart. We believe that his experiences here have put him in a position to go to Real Sociedad and succeed.”
I wish nothing but the best for Jonathan. I am thrilled that he had chosen to make Louisville City part of his story and I am excited for the rest of his career unfold. He will always have loyal fans cheering him on here in Louisville. While I am sad that he is leaving us, I am happy it is for an opportunity of that magnitude. But let’s be real. We all knew this was coming! The kid is talented, and we were blessed to get to see him play for our team.
In case you missed it, Zach and I had the opportunity to speak with him early this year in our debut podcast episode. Skip to ~41:21 for that interview. I’ll leave you with some fond JoGo memories in the form of pictures and GIFs.
